When should an ecommerce seller use SOS Inventory or Cin7 Core?
Native inventory tracking inside QuickBooks Online and Shopify works fine when you have one sales channel, simple products, and modest volume. Once any of that changes, gaps show up fast. Inventory counts drift between systems, COGS gets unreliable, and you spend more time fixing data than running the business. SOS Inventory and Cin7 Core both fill that gap, but they fit different operations.
You’ve likely outgrown native QBO or Shopify inventory if you’re selling across multiple channels like Amazon, Shopify, Walmart, and eBay, building bundles or kits, assembling or manufacturing from raw materials, storing inventory in more than one warehouse or 3PL, tracking landed costs, managing purchase orders with reorder points, or handling lot or serial numbers. QBO can technically hold inventory items, but it wasn’t built to run an operation. Shopify tracks what’s on the shelf for that store, but it doesn’t know about your other channels or your raw materials.
SOS Inventory is a strong fit when you want to stay close to the QuickBooks Online ecosystem. It syncs natively with QBO, handles light manufacturing and assemblies, supports work orders, and adds the bundle and kit functionality QBO lacks. Sellers with moderate volume, one or two channels, and a need for assembly tracking usually land here. It’s also less expensive than Cin7 Core, which matters when you’re scaling but not yet running a complex operation.
Cin7 Core makes more sense for ecommerce brands running real complexity. Multi-channel selling where you need a central hub for inventory across Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, and wholesale. B2B and B2C operations under one roof. Multiple warehouses with location-level tracking. Bills of materials for actual manufacturing. EDI connections, stronger purchasing workflows, and 3PL integrations. If you’re trying to run order-to-cash through one system instead of stitching together five, Cin7 Core is built for that. We work with ecommerce sellers across the Carolinas who hit this point usually somewhere between $1M and $3M in revenue, though the trigger is complexity more than dollars.
The decision usually isn’t between SOS and Cin7. It’s between staying with native tracking or moving to a dedicated inventory system. Once you’ve decided to move, the question is which one fits your operation today and where you’re heading in the next two years. Picking wrong means another migration in 18 months.
GMJ offers SOS Inventory setup and Cin7 Core setup as project-based engagements. Setup matters because both systems are only useful if the chart of accounts, item structure, COGS posting, and channel mapping are configured right from day one. We also handle the broader small business accounting, bookkeeping and tax services in Jacksonville, NC, so the inventory system feeds clean numbers into books that actually reflect what’s happening in your business.

More Questions
How should a seller handle sales from multiple states in the books?
Track sales by destination state, separate marketplace orders from direct sales, and record sales tax collected as a liability rather than revenue. Review where you have nexus at least annually with a professional.
Read answerWhat bookkeeping mistakes make restaurant profit look better than it is?
Restaurant profit gets inflated when net deposits get booked as sales, tips and sales tax sit in revenue, unpaid vendor bills go missing, inventory isn't reconciled to cost of goods sold, and payroll liabilities aren't accrued. These mistakes can make a 5% margin look like 15% until cash flow tells the real story.
Read answerWhat bookkeeping problems can delay a nonprofit tax return?
The most common delays come from unreconciled bank accounts, unclear donor restrictions, missing payroll or vendor records, incomplete grant reporting, and weak functional expense coding. Each issue forces a slow rebuild of records before Form 990 can be filed.
Read answerHow can a virtual bookkeeper support businesses from Jacksonville to Wilmington and Myrtle Beach?
Cloud accounting software, bank feeds, and secure document sharing let a virtual bookkeeper handle the same work as an in-person one. Distance stops mattering when the books live online and communication happens through scheduled calls, email, and messaging.
Read answerWhen should I stop doing my own bookkeeping and hire a monthly bookkeeper?
The signs are usually clear. You're behind on reconciliations, you can't tell if you're actually profitable, tax season feels like a scramble, or you're spending hours on books instead of running your business. Most owners wait longer than they should.
